CREATING THE CACTUS

Using your sage green yarn and 4 mm crochet hook, begin by creating a Magic Ring (MR) and Chain (CH) 1.

ROUND 1: Hook in 6 Single Crochets (SC) inside the MR. Pull the ring close. Total Stitches: 6

ROUND 2: Single Crochet Increase (SC INC) in every stitch in the round. Total Stitches: 12

ROUND 3: * SC in the next stitch, SC INC in the next stitch. Repeat * 6 times (Photo 1). Total Stitches: 18

ROUND 4: * SC in the next 2 stitches, SC INC in the next stitch. Repeat * 6 times (Photo 2). Total Stitches: 24

ROUND 5 TO ROUND 8: SC in every stitch in the round (Photo 8). Total Stitches: 24

ROUND 9: * SC in the next 2 stitches, Invisible Single Crochet Decrease (INV SC DEC) in the next stitch. Repeat * 6 times (Photo 4). Total Stitches: 18

ROUND 10 TO ROUND 11: SC in every stitch in the round (Photo 5). Total Stitches: 18

ROUND 12: SC in every stitch in the round, joining your dark brown yarn in the last stitch. Total Stitches: 18

CREATING THE SOIL

ROUND 13: Using your dark brown yarn, Single Crochet Increase in the Back Loops Only (SC INC BLO), of every stitch in the round (Photo 6), joining your light brown yarn in the last stitch. Total Stitches: 36

CREATING THE POT

ROUND 14: Using your light brown yarn, * SC in the next 5 stitches, INV SC DEC in the next stitch. Repeat * 5 times (Photo 7). Total Stitches: 30

ROUND 15: SC in every stitch in the round. Total Stitches: 30

ROUND 16: * SC in the next 4 stitches, INV SC DEC in the next stitch. Repeat * 5 times. Total Stitches: 25

ROUND 17: * SC in the next 3 stitches, INV SC DEC in the next stitch. Repeat * 5 times. Total Stitches: 20

ROUND 18: SC in every stitch in the round (Photo 8). Total Stitches: 20

ROUND 19: Invisible Single Crochet Decrease in the Back Loops Only (INV SC DEC BLO) in every stitch in the round. Total Stitches: 10

Fasten off and insert fiberfill into your Desktop Cactus Buddy #1, until firm (Photo 9). Sew the front loops of the opening closed, weaving in any loose ends.

CREATING THE FLOWER

Using your pink yarn and 4 mm crochet hook, create a MR and CH 1.

ROUND 1: Hook in 6 SC inside the MR, pull the ring close. Total Stitches: 6

ROUND 2: SC in every stitch in the round. Total Stitches: 6

ROUND 3: Working in the back loops only, * Slip stitch (SL ST) in the next stitch, CH-2 Picot in the same stitch. Repeat * 6 times. SL ST in the next stitch. Fasten off and leave a 5 inch tail for sewing.

*CHAIN 2 PICOT: Chain 2, slip stitch in the first chain.

Position and sew the flower on top of the cactus’ body (Photo 10). Weave in any loose ends.

CREATING THE CACTUS SPINES

Measure and cut around 15 inches of cream yarn. Separate one of the thread strands and insert into your darning needle. Insert into one of the stitches in Round 5 of the cactus’ body and exit on the same stitch, tying an inch of thread into a knot. Trim both ends of the thread measuring a centimeter long. This will be your cactus’ spines (Photo 11). Skip 2 stitches and continue the process until the entire cactus’ body is covered in spines.
