AMIGURUMI PATTERN
Susuwatari is a character from Studio Ghibli’s animated films, My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.
Also known as a travelling / wandering soot or a soot sprite, Susuwataris inhabits abandoned houses. Let’s create Susuwatari!
MATERIALS
- 8 PLY / DK YARN
- COLOR: BLACK
- 4 MM CROCHET HOOK
- SAFETY EYES
- WHITE FELT
- FIBERFILL
- DARNING NEEDLE
- SCISSORS
1. Begin Round 1 by creating a Magic Ring (MR), hook in 4 single crochets (SC) inside the MR. Pull the ring close.
2. Hook in 2 single crochets in every stitch in the round. Total stitches: 8

3. * SC in the next stitch, 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 12

4. * SC in the next 2 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 16

5. * SC in the next 3 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 20

6 to 8. SC in every stitch in the round. Total stitches: 20

9. * SC in the next 3 stitches, single crochet two together (SC2TOG). Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 16

10. * SC in the next 2 stitches, SC2TOG. Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 12
We will now attach the eyes of your Susuwatari. Using your white felt, cut out 2 little round shapes. Insert the safety eyes into the center of your white felt.

Position and attach the eyes of your Susuwatari between Rounds 5 and 6, spacing them 4 stitches apart.

11. * SC in the next stitch, SC2TOG in the next stitch. Repeat * 3 more times. Total stitches: 8

Take your fiberfill and insert into your soot sprite until rounded and firm.
12. *SC2TOG four times. Total stitches: 4

Slip stitch into the next stitch, leave a 3 inch tail for sewing. Sew the opening closed and weave in any loose ends.
