Scrunchies began making its appearance in the 80’s and has continued to adorn women’s hair and wrists until the present. This hair accessory also serves an important purpose—protecting your hair strands from damaging elastics, preventing split ends.
Here’s a simple pattern to create your own velvet scrunchie.
MATERIALS
MEDIUM WEIGHT / WORSTED WEIGHT VELVET YARN
5 MM CROCHET HOOK
DARNING NEEDLE
SCISSORS
HAIR ELASTIC
Join your velvet yarn with a Slip Stitch (SL ST) around the hair elastic and Chain (CH) 1.
ROUND 1: * Single Crochet (SC), CH 3, SC, CH 1 around the hair elastic. Repeat * 12 times. SL ST in the CH to join.
ROUND 2: CH 3, hook in 4 Double Crochets (DC) in the CH-3 space (Photo 1), CH 2, SC in the next CH-1 space. * CH 2, hook in 5 DCS in the CH-3 space, CH 2, SC in the next CH-1 space. Repeat * 11 times, CH 2. SL ST in the top of the Turning Chain (TCH) to join.

ROUND 3: CH 3, SL ST in the same stitch , repeat 4 times. (* CH 3, SL ST in the next DC, repeat * 4 times), repeat ( ) 11 times (Photo 2). SL ST in the top of the TCH to join. Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
