Kaonashi Amigurumi

Literally translating to ” Faceless”, Kaonashi or No-Face, is a character in the anime movie Spirited Away, capable of devouring humans and adapting it’s character traits and abilities, hiding its true form behind a mask.

Let’s create the yarn version of Kaonashi!


MATERIALS

MEDIUM WEIGHT/WORSTED WEIGHT COTTON BLEND YARN

COLORS: BLACK, WHITE, LAVENDER

4 MM CROCHET HOOK

FIBERFILL

DARNING NEEDLE

SCISSORS


KAONASHI BODY

With your black yarn and 4 mm crochet hook, create a Magic Ring (MR).

ROUND 1: Hook in 6 Single Crochet (SC) inside the MR. Pull the ring close. Total Stitches: 6

ROUND 2: Single Crochet Increase (SC INC) in every stitch in the round. Total Stitches: 12

ROUND 3: * SC in the next stitch, SC INC in the next stitch, repeat * 6 times. Total Stitches: 18

ROUND 4: SC in every stitch in the round.

ROUND 5: * SC in the next 2 stitches, SC INC in the next stitch. Repeat * 6 times. Total Stitches: 24

ROUND 6 TO ROUND 10: SC in every stitch in the round.

ROUND 11: * Single Crochet Decrease (SC DEC), repeat * 6 times, SC in the next 12 stitches. Total Stitches: 18

ROUND 12 TO ROUND 13: SC in every stitch in the round.

ROUND 14: * SC INC in the next stitch, SC in the next stitch. Repeat * 3 times. SC in the next 3 stitches, SC INC in the next stitch, SC in the next 3 stitches, SC INC in the next stitch, SC in the next 4 stitches. Total Stitches: 23

ROUND 15 TO ROUND 25: SC in every stitch in the round.

ROUND 26: Working in the back loops only, * SC in the next 3 stitches, SC DEC in the next stitch, repeat * 4 times. Total Stitches: 16

ROUND 27: * SC in the next 2 stitches, SC DEC in the next stitch, repeat * 4 times. Total Stitches: 12

Insert fiberfill into Kaonashi’s body until firm.

ROUND 28: * SC in the next stitch, SC DEC in the next stitch, repeat * 4 times. Total Stitches: 8

Fasten off and sew the opening closed, weaving in any loose ends.

KAONASHI’S ARMS (2)

Using your black yarn and 4 mm crochet hook, create a Slip Knot and CH 2.

ROUND 1: Hook in 4 SC inside the first CH. Total Stitches: 4

ROUNDS 2 TO 4: SC in every stitch in the round. Fasten off leaving a 4 inch tail for sewing.

KAONASHI’S MASK

Using your white yarn and 4 mm crochet hook, create a Slip Knot and Chain (CH) 2.

ROW 1: Hook in 3 SC into the first CH from the hook, turn your work. Total Stitches: 3

ROW 2: SC INC in the first stitch, SC in the next stitch, SC INC in the next stitch. Turn your work. Total Stitches: 5

ROW 3 to ROW 4: CH 1, SC in the next 5 stitches, turn your work.

ROW 5: SC DEC in the next stitch, SC in the next stitch, SC DEC in the next stitch. Turn your work. Total Stitches: 3

ROW 1: CH 1, Single Crochet Three Together (SC3TOG).

EDGING: CH 1, working around the mask, SC in the next 5 rows, SC INC in the next stitch, SC in the next 5 stitches, SC INC in the next stitch. Fasten off and leave an 8 inch tail for sewing.

MASK DETAILS

Using your black yarn and darning needle, begin to sew in the eyes and the mouth of Kaonashi. Take your lavender colored yarn and start adding the details above and below Kaonashi’s eyes. Weave in any loose ends.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Position the mask onto the protruding area, between Rounds 2 and 10 of Kaonashi’s body , center and sew into place. Attach and center the arms, below the mask between Rounds 16 and 17, spaced 3 stitches apart and sew into place. Weave in any loose ends.
